Helping Hand

Tallahassee firefighters will be lending a helping hand in the cleanup efforts of in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley.

The firefighters are now on standby to provide a task force to assist in the hurricane relief effort. Once they get the green light they will perform duties varying from paramedic assistance to search and rescue. The firefighters who are volunteering for this mission say they are happy to do so.

"It's the right thing to do and it is set up through the state's mutual aid agreement, and it's an opportunity for us to go out and make a contribution and to try and help these people recover from this event,” said Commander Wes Roberts of the Tallahassee Fire Department.

The firefighters were scheduled to leave Saturday, but state officials told them to standby until further notice once mobilized they could spend the next five to 10 days providing aid.
