Local Sea Turtle Volunteers Monitor Nests Before the Big Move
Alligator Point Turtle Patrol volunteers are busy this nesting season. While they're used to tracking and marking each sea turtle nest, this year they'll also assist in something that's never been done before- moving the eggs across the state.

For Bill Wargo, patrolling Alligator Point, looking for sea turtle nests is a labor of love. This is his seventh year keeping an eye on the underwater creatures, and while he's used to protecting the eggs from predators, this year there's a new predator - oil.
"It's just different from anything we've faced before, having to relocate them completely to another part of the state. We're glad to be able to participate in that though. And we are the front line people," said Wargo.
The nest moving process has already begun throughout the panhandle. The first one was removed Friday July 9th from Port St. Joe.
There's some debate over which is more dangerous - letting the hatchlings go out into the Gulf and face the oil or make a risky move to the east coast. But Wargo agrees that this process is the lesser of two evils. "Obviously, it's a last resort thing and considered the least risky of all the options, but it's still risky," explained Wargo.
This nest, which was discovered June 23rd will be moved August 11th. While there's no oil in sight right now, many fear the unpredictable weather and currents could change, making the survival rate zero if the hatchlings were to stay.
Wargo says that so far this nesting season, there have been 23 crawls - or tracks on the beach that may signal a sea turtle's nest - but only six or eight probable nests. But nesting season is far from over. They have a potential of moving eight to ten nests or as few as one or two.
