WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities have identified the man fatally shot by deputies in West Palm Beach.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says 18-year-old Christopher Thompson died Friday after opening fire at a Palm Beach County Credit Union parking lot.

According to investigators, deputies responded to a 911 call at about 4 p.m. regarding an armed man firing a weapon in the air.

When deputies arrived, authorities say Thompson shot at a patrol car, striking it three times. Deputies returned fire, striking and killing him at the scene.

The deputies involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave.

Authorities say a backpack found inside a gold sedan with its engine running in the parking lot did not have anything harmful inside.
