Tallahassee, FL - Some people probably embellish things on social media more than they'd like to admit, but making up an entirely different person is taking it a step further...

Romance can begin with the smell of flowers-- it can also can begin with a password and username.

Online dating is a phenomenon in the dating world that has taken off the within the pass couple of decades.

Scott Boatright: "I don't personally do online dating because I just rather meet the ladies in person."

Naquan Henry: "I think it's a great way for people to meet if that's what they're into. For some people I guess that's the way to go."

According to are 54 million single people in the U.S. They say 40 million of them have tried online dating...with 17 percent of marriages in the last year resulting from online dating.

There's a new term popping up on the web, it's called catfishing-- it's simple, all you do is create an online profile looking for a date and lie about who you are.

"I can't see why you'd wanna do that besides just having really nothing else to do." says Naquan Henry.

Whether you choose to date online or not, researchers warn to be careful of lies people make up or show on the web.
