News Release: City of Tallahassee
Tallahassee, Fla. -- Your chance to be directly involved in the development of the City of Tallahassee's budget is coming soon! Starting next week, the City will host a series of three interactive community budget workshops as part of the initial phase of crafting the City's Fiscal Year 2015 budget. These meetings will allow citizens to interact with City officials, provide input on the variety of City services and programs and ask questions related to budget priorities.
“We have a long history of including citizens in the budget process, and we have worked hard this year to make that process easy as well as fun,” Heath Beach, manager of the City’s Office of Budget and Policy, said.
The workshops are open to the public and will take place as follows:
While registration is not required, it is strongly encouraged. Registration will assist staff with planning and will help ensure that each venue is prepared for the number of citizens planning to participate. Individuals who pre-register will be eligible to win prizes donated by locally-owned and managed businesses. To register, visit Talgov.com and complete the registration form or call 891-8551.
This is the fourth year the City has hosted community budget workshops, and this year’s meeting will make you feel like a mastermind! Municipal Pursuit, the City’s version of the wildly popular board game Trivial Pursuit, will allow citizens to build their very own city. With this fun and interactive game, staff will guide citizens through the City’s budget and introduce them to City services and programs that are funded each year.
At each workshop, citizens will also have the opportunity to participate an in interactive polling process that will instantly display the group’s results. With electronic voting devices in hand, citizens will take an initial survey. This will be followed by a brief explanation of the state of the City’s budget, how the budget is prepared and economic challenges the City will face this coming fiscal year. Citizens will then play Municipal Pursuit. Post-game activities will include a final survey and the opportunity to visit City department displays. Refreshments will be available.
Information and feedback from the budget workshops will be summarized and is expected to be presented to the City Commission as part of the 2015 budget process. The budget will take effect on October 1, 2014. Feedback from the workshops will also be posted to Talgov.com as well as shared through the City's Facebook and Twitter accounts.
