Crime Stoppers Urges Neighborhoods to Speak Up

Updated: Mon 7:37 AM, Jun 04, 2012

Tallahassee, Florida - June 3, 2012 -

The Big Bend Crime Stoppers hosted an event in Frenchtown Sunday, hoping to build awareness about speaking up against crime.

Sunday was a beautiful day for Sarah Sutton to bring her children to this family fun event in Frenchtown.

However, it wasn't the weather or activities that motivated her to go.

The event was sponsored by Crime Stoppers of the Big Bend to teach people how to be proactive in keeping their neighborhoods safe.

"[We hope] not to be in no violence, to be in a good environment."

She believes speaking up is the right thing to do if you witness or know out about a crime.

"Whatever happened on Memorial Day, that could have been me or my kids."

Sutton is talking about the shooting that happened on Alabama Street, where Tallahassee police say two men were shot in the street.

To try to keep incidents like that at bay, Crime Stoppers wants people to call police if they see or suspect anything suspicious.

"If you don't know about crime stoppers, we are here to introduce ourselves and if you know about crime stoppers, we'll say use us," said Sharon Ofuani, Executive Director of Big Bend Crime Stoppers.

Law enforcement officers hope residents not only enjoyed the music, the food and all the fun, but that they also got the message that they have the power to make a difference.
