The Florida Department of Law Enforcement yesterday arrested a former Florida Department of Revenue employee on charges of grand theft and official misconduct. Deloris James Speed, 47, of Tallahassee, allegedly falsified tax payment receipts to reflect amounts that were less than the amounts actually collected and kept the difference.
The Florida Department of Revenue’s Office of Inspector General referred the case to FDLE in December 2010 after the discrepancies were identified during a routine tax audit. The investigation found that between October 2007 and December 2008, Speed took in sales tax revenues from a local business, provided a receipt to the business reflecting the correct amount they remitted, and then falsified the records being retained at DOR to indicate collection of a lower amount. Investigators allege Speed falsified information on tax payments for a total charge of theft greater than $300 and less than $5,000.
Speed was booked into the Leon County Jail, and bond was set at $5,000. The investigation is ongoing.
