Tallahassee, FL - Meals on Wheels has reached a warm, nutritious milestone. We tagged along today as volunteers with Elder Care Services delivered meal number four million.
Tanashia Huff and her three girls deliver Meals on Wheels each Wednesday. One of her usual stops is at Miss Annie's house.
The 84 year old has been getting a hot meal delivered every day for 15 years and Wednesday she received the program's four-millionth meal ...Chicken pilaf and spiced apples.
Tanashia Huff, Meals on Wheel volunteer: "We're pretty excited about it, like, we didn't even realize. We've been doing this for three, four years now so we're very honored to be a part of this."
Amber Tynan, Elder Care Services: "Quite an amazing feat with such a rich history. We've been in business for 41 years delivering our four millionth meal today is quite an accomplishment."
The Huffs are among the 600 plus volunteers at Elder Care Services who gas up and load up to deliver meals to 387 seniors a day.
77 year old Alberta Houston grins at the mention of the four-millionth meal and can't say enough about the difference it makes in her life.
Alberta Houston: "I'll be sitting out here on the porch watching for them."
"They're good about bringing my food out to me, that will save me from having to go in there and cook a meal. Every time they come I tell them, 'Thank you, ma'am! or Thank you, sir!"
Elder Care Services reached this milestone just weeks after federal budget cuts sliced 36-thousand dollars from their budget. They are now counting on the community to step up to help.
