Tallahassee, FL -- It took a little while to cut the ribbon, but the City of Tallahassee officially reopened Gaines Street to two-way traffic Thursday.

"We've waited a long while actually to reach this day, we've been through some rough times but I think that times are going to get a lot better," said Avant Garb owner Heather Wade.

Wade's vintage shop was on the front lines of the construction that's been ongoing for the past few years. She says now that tw- way traffic is back, she expects the city's efforts to revitalize the area to pay off.

"I've been in the construction of Gaines street for four and a half years, I wasn't part of the visioning side that is sometimes a lot harder work than the actual construction," said Assistant City Manager Jay Townsend.

Townsend said it took a while to get to this point because there were so many ideas, like having Gaines Street be a one lane to as many as four lanes road, and then there needed to be the construction.

All told, the City invested $17 million, Leon County invested $11 million, and the state of Florida put in $7 million to the project.

Right now, there is more than $128 million of private development projects currently on Gaines Street.
