Tallahassee, FL - "My sister was killed by a gun, by her ex-boyfriend and it inspired me to get involved with the community,"Jermaine Miller, a supporter of Gun Violence Prevention.

Jermaine Miller lost his sister last year. He's using his personal experience to keep others from the same fate. That is why he and several others attended the Gun Violence Prevention Conference Monday.

"It just seems like on this particular issue to say anything at all, you run the risk of getting beat down," said Bill Proctor, a Leon County Commissioner.

The conference, led by Commissioner Proctor, was sparked by the large crowds at the Tallahassee Gun Show at the North Florida Fair Grounds in the beginning of February, where firearm enthusiasts came out in droves to increase their collection.

"Observation of the cars packed into the fairground disturbed me quite a bit," said Proctor.

"We put our resources together and we go to work," said Rev. Julius Mcallister, from Bethel A.M.E Church.

The event touched on topics like having more gun buy back programs in our area to guns at school.

"We believe that now is the time, as we stated before, for us to come together to empower people with information," said Mcallister.

County officials say, they will do everything they can to make sure Tallahassee is a vibrant voice in this debate.

Anyone wanting to voice an opinion on this issue can do so at a discussion next Wednesday.

It will be at the Leon County Commission Chambers at 6 p.m.
