Associated Press Release
GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) -- A Jacksonville man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the 2009 death of a 16-month-old girl he was babysitting.
Prosecutors say 37-year-old Torey Leonard Jenkins was watching Destiny Patterson when she was seriously injured while the child's mother was at nursing school. The girl was taken to a nearby hospital and died the next day.
The Florida Times-Union reports an autopsy showed the girl had multiple blunt force impacts to her head, which caused severe brain injuries.
Authorities say Jenkins fled the area but was eventually arrested on an unrelated charge in Knoxville, Tenn.
Jenkins had pleaded no contest in July to second-degree murder prior to Friday's sentencing.
