Chabad of Tallahassee Press Release
Chabad of Tallahassee, a Jewish outreach organization, will be staging their annual Jewish Community Chanukah Celebration at Lake Ella on Sunday, December 1, 2013 from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m.
The event is open to the public, free of admission, and will feature a large CANDY MENORAH. There will also be entertainment, latkes, dreidels and chocolate gelt, face-painting, music and much more!
Chanukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is the ancient holiday which commemorates the miraculous burning of one day's supply of oil for eight days in a Temple in Jerusalem. It is celebrated for eight days by lighting candles and reciting special prayers of thanks. The holiday is replete with traditions, with displays of Jewish pride and unity, yet is also contains a universal message for people of all faiths - that, ultimately, good will triumph evil, freedom over oppression, and light over darkness.
Rabbi Schneur Oirechman, executive director of Chabad of Tallahassee says, "This is all about celebrating Hanukkah and bringing Hanukkah out to the public, because Hanukkah has a universal message of freedom of religion and freedom of expression, so we want to come out here and share it with everyone."
In the past dignitaries including the city mayor and city/county commissioners have attended the public Menorah lighting and are expected to attend this year as well.
Nine-foot Menorahs will also be displayed at the Tallahassee Regional Airport, City Hall, Publix Supermarkets at Killearn, Lake Ella & Ocala, and the governor's mansion and office.
This public Chanukah event is part of Chabad's ongoing Jewish community outreach, designed to make traditional practices such as the Chanukah holiday more exciting, stimulating and meaningful.
