Labor Day Holiday Service Changes

Press Release: Leon County Board of County Commissioners

All Leon County offices, libraries, and community centers, with the exception of Parks and Recreation facilities, will be closed on Monday, September 2, in observance of Labor Day.

The Leon County Main Library (downtown) will re-open on Tuesday, September 3, at 10 a.m., and library branches will re-open at 11 a.m.

Solid Waste Management offices and facilities will be closed September 2.

The Rural Waste Service Centers are normally closed on Mondays and will not be affected by the holiday.

Marpan Recycling will be closed.

Waste Management, Inc., will also be closed. Residential waste collection routes will be delayed one day during the week of Labor Day. For more information, call the Leon County Solid Waste Management Division at (850) 606-1800.

Leon County Animal Control will also be closed September 2; however, in the event of an emergency, service is available by calling the Leon County Sheriff’s Office at (850) 922-3300. Leon County Animal Control encourages residents to only use this service in cases of dangerous or aggressive dogs, sick or injured domestic animals, animal cruelty or animal bites. Injured wildlife calls will be forwarded to the St. Francis Wildlife Association at (850) 627-4151.

Press Release: City of Tallahassee

The City of Tallahassee’s administrative offices will be closed for the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 2. Following are schedule changes for the week of September 2-7 for solid waste customers living inside the Tallahassee city limits, StarMetro and the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center.

Solid Waste Schedule Changes

GARBAGE / RECYCLING / YARD WASTE (red week) / BULKY ITEMS (red week) – during the holiday week, all customers will receive service one day later than their regularly scheduled service:

Monday customers ► Tuesday, September 3
Tuesday customers ► Wednesday, September 4
Wednesday customers ► Thursday, September 5
Thursday customers ► Friday, September 6
Friday customers ► Saturday, September 7

Garbage and recycling containers should both be rolled to the curb for pickup by 6:30 a.m., with both containers returned to the home no later than the day after the collection day. Customers are reminded to separate yard waste piles from any bulky items set out for pickup. Customers needing more information may view solid waste schedules at or contact City of Tallahassee Utilities at 891-4YOU (4968).

StarMetro Schedule Changes

StarMetro, the City's mass transit system, will change its operations for the Labor Day holiday, as follows:

FIXED ROUTE SERVICES – On Monday, September 2, StarMetro will operate on a Sunday schedule with night service.
DIAL-A-RIDE SERVICES – Dial-a-Ride services will not be operating on Monday, September 2. Non-sponsored trips and Dial-a-Ride trip requests for Tuesday, September 3 must be scheduled by Friday, August 30.

Animal Service Center Closed Monday

The Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center is normally closed to the public on Mondays, and thus the facility will be closed on September 2. Normal hours will resume on Tuesday, September 3, with the Center opening at 10:30 a.m. Customers needing more information, including photos of animals available for adoption, may visit, or contact the Animal Service Center at 891-2950.

Press Release: City of Valdosta

The City of Valdosta will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

The Sanitation Division will collect residential garbage ONLY on Sept. 2. Citizens should place their green rollouts at the curbside by 5 a.m. on Monday to ensure their garbage is collected. Sanitation pick up services for recyclables and yard waste WILL NOT be available on Sept. 2, but will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 3, for both Monday and Tuesday routes.

Press Release: City of Thomasville

The City of Thomasville offices will be closed Monday, September 2, 2013.

Because of the holiday observances, some City services will be affected. City services’ schedules are as follows:

Energy Control Center

Regular 24-hour operational schedule

City of Thomasville Residential Refuse

No change in services

Thomas County Residential Refuse

Customers with Monday or Tuesday pick-up will have their trash picked up Tuesday, September 3, 2013.

Yard Trash

There will be no yard trash pick-up Monday, September 2, 2013. As yard trash pick-ups have no specific day assigned to any one residence or street, this will not affect the pick-up of any resident’s yard trash.

Commercial Refuse

Customers with Monday or Tuesday pick-up will have their trash picked up Tuesday, September 3, 2013.

Country Oaks Golf Course

Country Oaks will be open from 7:30 a.m. until dark, Monday, September 2, 2013.

Tee Times are recommended.

Municipal Airport

The Municipal Airport will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday, September 2, 2013.


The Landfill will be open for normal hours of operation Monday, September 2, 2013.
