TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The lion fish have been shaking things up under the sea and local fisherman are starting to take notice. They say that the lion fish are predators and they eat all the fish out of local lakes.
But they don't just eat other fish. According to Amanda Nalley of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission they also eat up the reefs. "They eat up everything that's on the reef. They compete with very economically important species like snapper and grouper," Nally says. "And what they can do a lot of time is eat up some of the fish that help keep that habitat healthy."
That's why the FWC has decided to take action. They will ban importing lion fish from other countries, allow people wearing rebreather gear to take lion fish using a spear and also, give them a permit to spear lion fish in areas where taking fish by spear has previously not been allowed.
What that means for you, is that now the waters will be safer to fish on. The FWC made sure to add that you can still have lion fish in your home aquariums.
