December 13, 2012 - Donations are down this holiday season and although sixteen hundred families applied for assistance with the Salvation Army, 401 children are still waiting for the help of the community.

According to Community Officer, Julio Da Silva, “we are waiting for the generosity of the public once again to come along with us and adopt those kids." He says every family they help will receive a box that comes with clothing shoes and toys and also they receive a bag full of food for the family.

Tallahassee Animal Services started the Animal Angel Tree 6 years ago. Each ornament purchased off the tree has a card behind it that lists an item that the shelter needs. Perri Dale at Tallahassee Animal Services says “the items on there are things we aren't budgeted for so it just provides those extra things we need to care for the animals and make them comfortable."

The “Santa to a Senior Program” through Home Instead Senior Care has 300 seniors in need this year and all you have to do is stop by Sam’s Club or the Walmart on Thomasville Road to select an ornament off the tree and shop for the items listed. Marc Moncrief, the Director of Marketing at Home Instead Senior Care says the items are “really things we take for granted, there's maybe sometimes microwaves, or blankets but most of them are pajamas there's gowns, t-shirts, underwear, toiletry items." Currently, there are still over 100 seniors on the two trees hoping that Santa will grant their Christmas wishes.

If you would like to help any of these charities, there is still time.... The Salvation Army Angel Tree is currently up at Governors Square Mall in front of JC Penney until December 18th. You can stop by Tallahassee Animal Services at Tom Brown Park and select an angel of their tree located in the lobby and donate until January 2, 2013 and the deadline for Home Instead Senior Care's Santa for Seniors is December 17th.
