Tallahassee, FL-A man is charged with animal cruelty after the remains of a dog were found in the backyard of a Tallahassee home.

"The dog was extremely emaciated, very thin, the bones were showing through the skin," said Tallahassee Police Spokesman, Officer Robert Grasso.

The dog's name is Diamond. Police say its owner, Terrance L. Barber is now charged with one count of Animal Cruelty Causing Starvation, Death, Pain and Suffering. Police say Barber was evicted from the home on Dent Street and allegedly left the dog there where it died.

"It saddens me. It's like child abuse because an animal is basically like a child," said Ronnie Wilson who lives in the neighborhood.

A necropsy performed on the dog showed it died from starvation. Its stomach devoid of food with only pieces of wood and plastic found inside. Various parasites like heartworms were also in Diamond's system. Police estimate the dog had been dead for about a week before they found it.

"We do occasionally come across these types of cases and they are pretty heinous," said Grasso.

Barber posted bond and has since been released from jail.

We reached out to Barber's attorney but have yet to hear back.
