Thursday was the 16Th Annual Sonia Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day.
The day is named in honor of the first woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics.
"Hopefully, it shows them that math can be fun. Math isn't scary. It gives them an opportunity to see applications of mathematics, some hands-on activities with mathematics," says Denise Reid, a VSU math professor.
Reid says a $1,700 grant helped make the event possible this year.
VSU will offer a $3,000-$5,000 scholarship this fall to students who show an interest in mathematics.
