Tallahassee, FL- Students for America's Military an organization on FSU's campus sponsored a back-off Sunday afternoon at the Osceola Leasing Center. The group got its roots in town, but now it is making a nationwide impact. The back-off was a way for the group to raise money for their philanthropy. "All of the proceeds go to sending care packages in the month of December, so we'll have a supply drive at the end of the month," said Meghan Peterson, President of Students for America's Military.
There were eight teams entered into the bake-off with the winning team receiving some goodies of gift cards and shirts. Kappa Alpha Theta was one of the groups who entered the contest. "We really just wanted to participate because it's such a great cause. This philanthropy event is a good way for us to get involved on campus and we would just love to be able to give back to the troops," said Sam Golden of Kappa Alpha Theta.
You can't have a bake off with out the help of judges. People were invited to be taste-testers of the sweet treats for a fee of $3. The categories voted on were Most Decorated and Best Taste. I myself was able to try the Freedom Cake from the Kappa Alpha Theta team and it was delicious.
For students who have family currently serving in the military the organization has been great support system.
"Everyone is just willing to listen and we send care packages to my brother. It was just nice to have friends to talk to about it," said Alexandra Christy, who has a brother and husband serving in the military.
Students for America's Military is also involved in a letter writing marathon to send to troops, and work with the Collegiate Veterans Association at FSU.
