More Reaction to the Brogan Museum Closing

Tallahassee, FL -- December 16, 2011 --

It's been a tough 24 hours here for the supporters and employees of the Brogan Museum, and there are plenty of unanswered questions.

First of all, how do you move forward, and secondly, how do you get the community more involved in the museum.

Trish Hanson, Brogan Museum COO says, "The idea of reinvention is very exciting, on the other hand when you have kids here right now, it's sad you're not going to be able to continue your services."

Over the last several months the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science fought to keep its doors open through fund raisers and high-profile exhibits.

Their campaign to raise 500 thousand dollars in five months ended in disappointment. Just 25,000.

Now some of those disappointed faces have to imagine not coming to the museum.

Reace Kaleko, School of Arts and Sciences Students, says, "A very sad thing for me. I've been coming here for a very long time. I love this place. I have a lot of memories here. So it's going to be pretty hard for me."

Maya Manciagli, School of Arts and Sciences Students, adds,"I was really disappointed. This place has always been a great place for me to learn, with all the different exhibits that come through. I always learn something new. And their always different."

But not everyone feels that way.

Some say there isn't enough variation at the museum, and that a wider selection of art could be more appealing to a diverse population.

Museum Patron Allison Wiman says, "I think they didn't really change over enough. And once you've been here once, especially with the children's exhibit, if you come once, it's OK not to come for another 5 years."

The museum board will now seek public input on how the museum can improve and reinvent itself before opening again.

The Board of Directors here at the Brogan Museum has a large task ahead of them, namely how to keep the museum afloat. But everyone I asked here today says they want the Brogan's doors to stay open for years to come.

The Brogan's fatal flaw was a lack of focus. Doesn't work to blend children/science with fine, original works of art. This is an opportunity for Tallahassee culture leaders to get together, gather resources, gut the interior, and refashion MBM into an excellent and much-needed regional art museum. Chucha Barber did her best with what she had!! Who else could get Italy to lend masterpieces to the MBM? I say, now's the time to totally start over!

Sorry to see this happen, but the Brogan was not a pleasant place to visit. Hopefully, this is the "last nail in the coffin" for a PAC.
