MIAMI (AP) -- Miami-Dade Police are investigating the death of an inmate in the county's psychiatric jail ward.
Joaquin Cairo died July 9 after being rushed to a Miami hospital for surgery. He had complained to court officials the previous week that he had been violently slammed into a bed by a fellow inmate, fracturing his pelvis.
Cairo was booked into the jail June 25. It wasn't immediately clear what charged he faced. Records show Cairo had been arrested in May on a misdemeanor mischief charge.
Miami-Dade police investigate all deaths in the county jails. Police spokesman Javier Baez tells The Miami Herald that Cairo's death is "an open death investigation pending further interviews and review by the medical examiner."
