Positive Trends in Local Unemployment Numbers

Tallahassee, FL – Today, the Department of Economic Opportunity Labor Market Statistics Center released the local and state unemployment figures for March 2013. Per the figures released, the WORKFORCE plus region saw a significant decrease in the unemployment rate moving from 6.4 to 5.9 percent over the month and a 1.4 percent decrease from 7.3 percent over the year.

In March, Gadsden County saw a significant .6 percent decrease from the February 2013 rate, moving from 7.8 to 7.1 percent. Over the year, there was a notable decrease of 2.0 percent from 9.1 percent. Leon County also saw a decrease as well moving from 6.2 to 5.8 percent over the month and a 1.2 percent decrease over the year from 7.0 percent. Lastly, Wakulla in turn, saw a decrease over the month moving .3 percent from 6.0 to 5.7 percent, however, they had a significant decrease over the year at 2.0 percent moving from 7.7 percent. With these decreases seen locally, the Tallahassee MSA had the fourth lowest unemployment in the state at 5.9 percent behind the Crestview/Ft. Walton MSA (4.8 percent), Gainesville MSA (5.2 percent) and Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach MSA (5.7 percent). Additionally, the local MSA was 1.1 percentage points lower than the non-seasonally adjusted state rate of 7.0 percent and 1.8 percentage points lower than the national rate of 7.6 percent. All numbers reported for local unemployment are not seasonally adjusted, meaning seasonality is not taken into account.

“The continued decrease seen in local unemployment numbers is a clear indication that employers are hiring and job seekers are gaining employment,” Richard Williams, Interim CEO of WORKFORCE plus said. “Employers who are looking to hire should ensure they are utilizing the services of their local workforce board to help expedite and cut costs in their hiring process.”

The Tallahassee MSA held the second-highest over the year growth rate in employment in several industries including manufacturing (+6.7 percent); leisure and hospitality (+6.6 percent); and other services (+4.5 percent). Positive numbers were further reported in our most Help Wanted Online report showing an increase of 1,050 (+24.8 percent) jobs from March 2012. Most online job ads were in the computer and mathematical occupations; sales and related occupations; and healthcare practitioners and technical occupations.
