Thomasville, GA- Students at Thomas County Central High School had one thing on their minds Friday; dancing, dancing, and more dancing.

"Our special education kids don't get a chance to come to prom and homecoming ,so this is their way to shine every year," said Alma Simmons, a special education instructor at Thomas County Central.

The gymnasium of the school was transformed into a psychedelic blast from the past for this year's tie-dye retro theme.

Students say, they've been looking forward to the dance for months.

"I'm having fun at the Thomas County High School and my favorite part is the dancing," said Becky West, a 12th-grade student at Central.

Nick Casey, also a 12th-grader at Central said, "I'm feeling good being here. I'm thankful the school does it every year."

Folks at the school say this is the fifth year they've hosted the dance.

It started off with just Thomas County and Thomasville City schools, but now, the invite has spread to seven South Georgia counties and more than 350 students.

"They get to mix and mingle with different schools and get to meet other kids at different schools and that's what it's all about, the community and just coming together," said Simmons.

School officials say, they hope it's a day the students will always remember.

"I don't look at them as special education," said Simmons. "They are normal kids. They just have these little disabilities that make them very special and it just thrills me to give them this chance to have their own day."

Organizers say the dance wouldn't have been possible without the help of the school staff and volunteers from their National Honor Society.
