Tallahassee FL- Last Friday may have been a tease for what's in store this week, and as any good news station would do we checked out what you need to do to prepare for the cold temps.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure as the saying goes and that is definitely the case when it comes to freezing," said the owner of Mcneill Plumbing, Chase Mcneill.

When the weather outside reaches freezing temperatures the water that flows through your water pipes and freezes. It then expands and cracks the pipe.
If they have a pipe that is frozen then they leave the house to go to work and then come home they are likely to have a thawed out pipe and a leak at the same time and therefore a flooded house," explained Mcneill.

The best way to prevent your pipe from bursting? Keep a stream of water flowing through your outside faucets. As Mcneill explained your backflow needs to be protected as well and you could either wrap them in blankets and cover or have a proffessional install a proper protective structure.

While your outside, you should think about those beautiful spring blossoms you love and cover up those plants so they won't freeze and die. You could use a sheet or towel in and then layer it with a tarp or plastic to keep it warm.

Something else you need to protect are all our sweet loving furry critters. Tallahassee Animal Shelter Spokesperson, Perri Dale told us, "Like I say if your cold then they are going to be cold so they can easily slip into hypothermia they can get frost bite just the same a person would."

That's why it's important to keep your pets inside, or put them in an enclosure off the ground with lots of straw and blankets food and water.

You'll also want to check your car's battery tonight, because it'll need more energy to warm up when it's colder outside.

You'll also want to keep your anti-freeze ready and available during your commute.
