Hundreds of thousands of gallons of raw sewage is leaking into the Withlacoochee River in Lowndes County.

The spill was discovered around 10 a.m. yesterday, and since then more than a 1.5M gallons of raw sewage has already spilled into the Withlacoochee River

The cause of the spill is a burst sewer main. That main is roughly 5 ft. below the ground, and has caused pools of sewage to build up, located just west of Hwy. 133.

Roughly 900 gallons of sewage is being discharged into the river every minute, and there was some dispute as to whether this is a Lowndes County sewer line or a Valdosta City line.

"Oh yeah, I'm concerned," said a resident who lives next to the river. "I'm deeply concerned about the health hazard for this community."

"We just assumed that it was ours yesterday and so when the contractor showed up today and started to do work and repairs it was found that it is after all not our line," Sementha Mathews, City of Valdosta, said.

Cleanup crews have been out there for most of the day.

Valdosta, GA - Thousands of gallons of raw sewage started spilling into the Withlacoochee River in Valdosta Wednesday with no end in sight.

It's under the Highway 133 bridge. The city tells us the leak started around 10:30 Wednesday morning. It's estimated that 900 gallons of sewage are spilling out per minute. Do the math, that's well over a million gallons a day.

Crews are warning passers-by and neighbors to stay away.

"People need to know that south of Highway 133 they need to avoid contact with the Withlacoochee River for at least the next week. They should not fish or swim in the river. There will be high bacteria counts as the waste water is entering the river," said John Waite, Valdosta Environmental Manager.

Crews will get back out there Thursday morning to try to fix the leak.
