Thomasville, GA- Deputies and Police are warning against celebrating tonight by firing gunshots into the air.

The Thomas County Sheriff's Office says deputies see an increase in the number of calls that come in for "shots fired" after midnight on New Years Eve.

They want to remind people that what goes up, must come down.

Shooting guns into the air can not only cause serious injury to people and property, it also causes people to panic.

"It scares everyone," said Captain Steve Jones with the Thomas County Sheriff's Office. "It scares the neighbors. People are sleeping and awaken to gunfire and especially in light of the things that have been going on in the nation, everybody is a little on edge when it comes to guns right now."

Captain Jones says you could face reckless conduct charges if caught firing celebratory gun shots.
