Suspect in Georgia Megachurch Shooting in Custody

College Park, GA - Authorities say the suspect in a deadly shooting at a Georgia megachurch has been taken into custody.

Eric Heinze with the U.S. Marshals Service says 52-year-old Floyd Palmer was taken into custody Wednesday. No other details were immediately available.

The shooting happened Wednesday morning inside the chapel at World Changers Church International in College Park.

The victim was identified as Gregory McDowell, a 39-year-old church volunteer who was leading a prayer at the time of the shooting.

World Changers Church International is one of the nation's largest. It's located in College Park, about 15 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta. Police said the church's founder and leader, the Rev. Creflo Dollar, was not at the church at the time of the shooting.

Authorities were searching Wednesday morning for 52-year-old Floyd Palmer and considered him armed and dangerous.

Fulton County Police Cpl. Kay Lester says he calmly walked into the chapel of World Changers Church International before a 10 a.m. service, opened fire, then left.

The name of the victim was not immediately released. Police said the church's founder and leader, the Rev. Creflo Dollar, was not injured.

The 50-year-old Dollar is one of the most prominent African-American preachers based around Atlanta, with a ministry of satellite churches across the U.S.


College Park, GA - Police say one person was critically wounded when a gunman opened fire inside the chapel of a Georgia megachurch just south of Atlanta.

Fulton County police Cpl. Kay Lester says the suspect got away in a vehicle, and was still at large around 11 a.m. Wednesday after the shooting at World Changers Church International.

Lester said she didn't know how many shots were fired. She said the church holds services on Wednesday mornings, but she did not know whether the service had started or how many people were inside during the gunfire.

The church is one of the nation's largest. It is led by the Rev. Creflo Dollar, its founder and senior pastor, but there was no indication that he was injured.

A church spokeswoman could not immediately be reached.
