Tallahassee, FL-Ten people are displaced including a six-year-old after a fire rips through a Tallahassee apartment complex Saturday.

The fire was reported in the 800 block of California Street around 5:15 p.m.

Neighbors say they could see the plumes of smoke billowing from the roof top as the fire spread.

"I was just sitting on the porch and we saw the smoke coming up, little by little," said Nyiesha Durden who saw the fire.

Firefighter say the fire started in the kitchen of a first-floor apartment while people were asleep inside.

"The two occupants woke up the smell of smoke and were able to safely evacuate the structure and wake up some of the neighbors in the building and get them safely evacuated," said Tallahassee Fire Department spokesman, Lt. Mike Bellemy.

Firefighters say the flames quickly spread through the back of the first floor apartment and up to the one above. In total, firefighters estimate about $200,000 dollars worth of damage was done to the complex and they say at least 10 people are now without a home.

"One unit is heavily involved with fire damage the other three units the other three units in the complex have significant smoke and some fire damage," said Bellemy.

Durden who witnessed the fire from her from porch says this isn't the first she's seen a fire here. She says she recalls a much smaller one from a few months back.

"That apartment right there caught on fire, but they had put it out so it's not new on this built," she said.

Despite the heavy damage, firefighter say no one was hurt. They also say it's unclear when if at all any of those families may return to their homes.

The Red Cross is assisting those 10 people displaced by the fire.

At the time, the cause of that fire still remains under investigation
