Tallahassee, FL - Americans throughout the country celebrate our nation's independence with back yard bbq's and fireworks, but that's not the only celebration happening today.

People are also celebrating what it means to be an American.

"It means more than just freedom, it means piece of mind and love of neighbor," said Mary Johnson, Tallahassee Resident.

Johnson started celebrating the fourth of July by attending a church service at Lake Ella. Johnson said Independence Day is important to her and she wouldn't want to live in any other country.

"We need to not exploit the wonderful things that we've been given here. I've always felt we were born in the Garden of Eden and God has given us so many beautiful things that we need to take care of," said Johnson.

The freedoms we're able to enjoy in this country are thanks in large part to our nation's military. Brandon Moss, who is an active service member in the US Air Force was with his family at the Korean Memorial on Friday morning. Ross is able to be in Tallahassee this year and said spending the fourth with his family is one of the best gifts he's ever received.

"This time last year I was in Afghanistan, I couldn't celebrate with my family, but it means everything. I have my wife, my dog, my niece, my brother, my mom, my sister-in-law, it just means the world to me," said Ross.
