Lowndes County, GA -
Lowndes County Sheriff's Deputies got more than they bargained for during a RECENT traffic stop for a tinted window violation. After searching the car on I-75 they found more than a hundred checks.
That's when they arrested Craig Koonce, Eric Neri and Keith Brooks.
Lieutenant Stryde Jones of the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office said
"during the stop, made a search of the vehicle and located one hundred and twenty six real US Treasury checks. The checks, we're still trying to determine exactly where they were taken from. Although we have determined some of them were stolen and others were obtained through fraudulent tax filings."
The sheriffs office says that Koonce, Neri and Brooks were most likely on their way to cash the checks. All together the checks were valued at more than $107,000 dollars. Now all three men are being held at the Lowndes County Jail.
They are each being charged with multiple counts of Theft by Receiving Stolen Property.
Lieutenant Stryde went on to say "this is just the beginning of the investigation. More charges on additional people are probably forthcoming as they're identified and as their involvement is known."
