Tallahassee, FL -- April 5, 2012 --

At times shouting to try to attract Gov. Rick Scott's attention, a crowd of about 150 rallied Wednesday at the Capitol for slain teenager Trayvon Martin. It was also the 44th anniversary of Martin Luther King's assassination. Speakers demanded the arrest of George Zimmerman, who shot Martin on Feb. 26 but hasn't been charged, and an end to the stand-your-ground law under which Zimmerman may defend himself. Rep.Alan Williams, a Tallahassee Democrat, wore a hoodie as he led the crowd the crowd in a chant of "We are Trayvon Martin." Tallahassee Mayor John Marks spoke of Martin's parents and said the criminal justice system must do its job. "Were not here to try anybody in the streets or through the press," he said. "We just want the justice system to work as it should." Former state Sen. Al Lawson, who voted for the 2005 stand-your-ground law allowing gun carriers to meet force with force, acknowledged voting for the measure and called it a mistake. "We didn't really read the bill all the way through, and an interpretation in a certain section of the bill is where the problem is," he said. "I don't think it's just a matter of changing the law. I think we ought to get rid of the bill." Lawson is running for Congress against U.S. Representative Steve Southerland, a Panama City Republican.

Tallahassee, FL -- April 4, 2012 --

Protestors marched in Tallahassee, calling "Justice for Trayvon Martin."

About 100 protesters made their way up the Civic Center to the steps of the Old Capitol today 4-4-12. They say they want to see an arrest made in the case. And they want to see Florida's 'Stand Your Ground Law' revised.

"By having these peaceful protests and getting everyone to speak out about how they really feel on the situation, I think that, that really keeps me calm," says Bonita Walker who attended the rally.

About 75 demonstrators rallied at the state Capitol Wednesday to call for justice in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. They say they want an arrest in the case now and Florida's Stand Your Ground law should be repealed.

Martin was shot and killed by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. Zimmerman claims it was in self-defense.

Tallahassee, Florida - April 4, 2012 - Noon

About a hundred protested are rallying in the Capitol Courtyard. They are calling for justice in the case of Trayvon Martin. The rally just wrapped up moments ago. The rally also fell on the 44th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. They did this because they say they want justice; the same justice King sought over 40 years ago. Now, the case of Trayvon Martin has put Florida's Stand Your Ground law in the national spotlight. 17-year-old Martin was shot and killed by 26-year-old Neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in February. Zimmerman says it was done in self defense.

At today's rally, organizers are calling for justice. They want to see that the case go to court and they want to rework the Stand Your Ground law.

We will have more on the rally coming up tonight on Eyewitness News.

You will recall the incident of the beating of the black homeless man Sherman Ware on December 4, 2010 by the son of a Sanford police officer. The beating sparked outrage in the community but there were very few that stepped up to do anything about it. … Do you know the individual who stepped up when no one else in the black community would? Do you know who spent tireless hours putting flyers on the cars of persons parked in the churches of the black community? Do you know who waited for the church-goers to get out of church so that he could hand them flyers in an attempt to organize the black community against this horrible miscarriage of justice? Do you know who helped organize the City Hall meeting on January 8, 2011 at Sanford City Hall?? That person was GEORGE ZIMMERMAN. Ironic isn’t it? Self defense..plain and simple.

Not one of these politicians, lawyers and ministers who are helping to fan the flames of hatred is aware of the racial mix possibilities for Zimmerman. His father is from here but the mother is from Peru. Were Crump, Sharpton and the others mindful that only 15% of the Peruvian population is considered White and everyone else is a variation of Amerindian, Mestizo, Black and Asian? But that does not stop the racial agenda of Crump, Sharpton and the others. No, they see only what they want to see because they can profit from it. Zimmerman used self-defense to save his life while he was being beaten up by a football playing over 6 foot male. And that is all this episode should be about.

"I just want the justice system to work as it should." I want the justice system it to get you corrupt greedy people out of government. Number 1. Marks. Mayor you speak without moral authority to most. Don't be fooled just because people kiss-up to you because of your position of power. People still have their inntermost about you. Would I buy a used car from this guy? I don't think so..........Would I give this man a key to my house like I do with my pest control guy? I don't think so. I hope the day is soon. Tallahassee is really starting to be recognized as tainted city government. Remember the mayor of Detroit thought he was too big to fail. He had a lot more political backing than you do. You have no moral authority.

Speak for yourself and not others. When you say "got off" that means that the "famous athlete" was ARRESTED. Zimmerman has not been arrested. So give me something relative...please

If the blacks at this rally put as much effort into bettering their own lives they might get somewhere, but as it stands the only time it is ok to put out is when you are protesting something.

For well over a year, citizens have been asking Mayor Marks and other local leaders to addresss the problem of increased violence in Tallahassee. Our local young adults and others are choosing the life of crime or being an innocent victim of crime and Mayor Marks remained completely SILENT. Now, Mayor Marks is speaking on the Capitol steps publicly about a trajic incident that not ONE person in Tallahassee had anything to do with and futhermore was the act of ONE man in Sanford, FL. Mayor Marks, we need YOUR help in Tallahassee because lives are being ruined and lost and the crime rate is at levels never before experienced in Tallahassee. Will you speak up for us?

We are employing women to conceive children out of wedlock in a poverty stricken environment. Those kids are these kids that are now growing up and killing us.Stop hiring women and paying them a monthly check plus giving them free healthcare to have children out of wedlock. Let everyone feed and clothe their own children. Stop finger pointing and start being responsible for your own self's.

@ You are ruining... You are incorrectly placing the blame of all crime in Tallahassee and America on females and that does not add up to the FACTS. The majority of the crimes in America are done by MALES and you have the nerve to point the finger at women. If MALES were responsible men they would work one or two jobs to provide for the needs of their children and the Government would not be sending the women checks. GET REAL....

One more thing...did anyone catch the edited version of the phone call made by Zimmerman on NBC (to make it sound racist)? Why is this allowed? An apology by NBC isn't enough. Now I demand justice. The media has sparked a racial fire. I'm not sure why...but it certainly dividing our communities. The black leaders leading the protests should be ashamed of themselves. They pick and choose events throughout this country for their own personal agenda. They don't care about the black community. And let me say once more....to see people protesting over this is the most absurd thing I've seen since the day I watched people celebrate when O.J. Simpson was acquitted for the brutal murder of two white people. It's disgusting. If Zimmerman is found guilty...so be it. He will be sentenced and punished for his crime. However, before you start marching up and down the streets...get the facts straight. There is A LOT of information that the ignorant refuse to acknowledge. My personal opinion is that this particular case has exposed the true racists. It's rather unfortunate...
