Press Release: Valdosta Police Department

Two Lowndes County residents, Demetrius Swopes and Israel Smith, have been arrested for multiple counts of Entering An Automobile to Commit Theft.

Valdosta Police Department Bureau of Investigations personnel along with personnel from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department have recently worked multiple cases of Breaking and Entering Automobiles involving theft from the inside of vehicles.

Twenty-eight arrest warrants were signed against Swopes and Smith for cases having been committed within the city of Valdosta and the pair face indictment on another 22 counts of Entering Auto to Commit Theft in the City of Valdosta.

Within Valdosta, detective personnel have been able to resolve cases on Napa Drive, Old Vine Way, Baytree Road, Park Avenue, Forrest Run Circle, Druid Oaks Drive, and Connell Road. Most of the thefts involved items taken from unlocked vehicles with a few cars actually having windows broken out. Common items taken were cash, GPS units, and electronic items. The thefts occurred in February 2013.

Chief Brian Childress stated the resolution of this crime spree was the result of a tremendous team effort between law enforcement personnel with the Valdosta Police Department and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department.

Citizens are urged to lock their car doors whenever they exit their vehicle. This means to lock your vehicle even when it is parked at your own home. Never leave valuables including loose change, electronics, purses, wallets, briefcases, etc. in the passenger compartment of your vehicle. Either lock the items in the trunk or the best deterrent is to take these items out of your car when you arrive at your destination.
