Valdosta, GA -

Valdosta's cool breeze blew through 957 pinwheels on the lawn of city hall Thursday morning. Although beautiful, their presence represents a darker reality.

Sara Riley is with Choices for Life of Georgia. She said "that's the number of reported cases of child abuse and child neglect in Lowndes County in the year 2012."

Valdosta Mayor John Gayle said "there's no telling how many more that we don't know about. And so it's really adamant that people who see things going on, who know that they're next door neighbor might have this problem or something like that, that they speak out."

The pin wheel campaign started in Lowndes County. There have been more than 2 million distributed since it went nationwide back in 2008.

It wasn't just pinwheels. The seventeenth annual Blue Ribbon Campaign also kicked off.

Detective Sabrina Smith of the Valdosta Police Department said "the blue ribbons being placed down town on the light posts is just so that our community knows what April represents. April is child abuse awareness and prevention month."

Roughly 3 children die every day in America as a result of child abuse and neglect.
