Over the past 35 years, WCTV's Frank Ranicky has owned the market on popularity in television.
But he's feeling the heat from one man who may be on the t.v. more than Frank. And like Frank, he's one of the most trusted men in all of Tallahassee.
That's why TPD's Public Information officer Dave McCranie is Someone You Should Know.
His face is plastered on WCTV at least three times a week. If he's not on the morning show, then he's talking about crime but mostly, solving crime.
"It's kind of humorous how many people come up and will say, hey, you're Officer McCranie. I know you from TPD because I've seen you on t.v."
But Dave McCranie is more than just a pretty face. He's on call 24-7, literally. If something happens in our area, it's up to Dave to deal with the problem, the media, and his family.
"The phone does ring at inopportune times, 4am, 10 at night. But I put it in perspective. Someone has to do this. Someone has to be there for the community. Someone has to provide information."
McCranie has been there for the community his whole life. He's from Tallahassee, his wife's family lives in Tallahassee, and his brother is a police officer in the Capital City. Being the PIO for the TPD is a job that's not meant for everyone....but not everyone can handle the load like Officer McCranie.
"When you go home at night, at the end of the day, you look back and feel like you actually accomplished something. You did something good for your neighbor, your friends, for your family."
The job isn't always easy. And each day a new case falls in his lap. Right now, it's Rachel Hoffman. Years ago, it was Melanie Smith on Call Street. That's one that sits with Officer McCranie to this day.
"Anytime something happens in our community, a robbery, a murder, I think each officer takes personal accountability for it. And it bothers us because we can't control it."
"It's a tough job, but it's a passion and I'm grateful to do it."
