Tallahassee, Fla. - On April 28, 2012, at about 10:15 p.m., FSU Police
responded to the area of the Westcott Building to investigate a report
of a robbery and attempted robbery by sudden snatching occurring
simultaneously. Four persons who had just attended the symphony at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall were leaving when they were approached by a male, later identified as Narada Phelps, 32.
After contacting the two couples, Phelps suddenly attempted to snatch the purse of a woman, then attempted the take the purse of a second woman. When the second woman resisted, the suspect then grabbed the purse of the first women, took it, and fled. The husband of the woman gave chase but stopped when the suspect
verbally threatened to shoot him.
As officers from the FSUPD and Tallahassee Police Department assisted the victims, other officers swarmed the area, seeking the suspect. Sgt. Thomas Murphy of the FSUPD spotted Phelps in the area of Martin Luther King Boulevard near College Avenue. As Phelps exited a car, he matched the description that the victims had given police. Phelps also pulled his shirt off and threw it in the car as he was about to walk away. Sgt. Murphy stopped him and also noted that Phelps way sweating profusely.
Sgt. Murphy lit up the inside of the car and saw a woman's purse and its contents strewn about the inside of the car. Phelps was detained, and the victims positively identified him as the subject who robbed them.
Phelps was arrested for Armed Robbery by Suddenly Snatching (for
implying he had a weapon during the footchase), a second degree felony, and Unarmed Robbery by Sudden Snatching (for the attempt on the second purse), a third-degree felony. All of the victim's belongings were recovered and no actual weapon was found by police. Phelps has no affiliation with FSU.
"Obviously, we hate that the victims in this case had their night
spoiled by this person," said Maj. Jim Russell of the FSUPD, "but we are happy we could help bring resolution to the case with an arrest and recovery of property. We get a great feeling when the good guys win one."
