Sheriff Larry Campbell says a fraud ring has been dismantled in Leon County. Sheriff Campbell stated, “These investigations were brought to our attention by vigilant employees in the loss prevention sections of our local Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores. Their diligence coupled with good information sharing, surveillance and hard work from the detectives uncovered and resolved several crimes at once.”

On August 12, 2012, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office Financial Crimes Unit was contacted by Wal-Mart Loss Prevention Officers who witnessed an employee accepting multiple counterfeit $20 bills.

Detectives made contact with Daesha Johnson, 26, and Ulysses Hall, 26. Hall and Johnson have two children together. Hall was observed passing Johnson 25 counterfeit $20 bills for purchases at the Wal-Mart located at 4021 Lagniappe Way in Tallahassee. Detectives learned that the counterfeit bills were possibly coming from the residence located at 5506 B.J. Cox Road, which is in the area of another counterfeiting case involving two counterfeit $20 bills being given to a pizza delivery man to pay for pizzas. All 27 counterfeit bills displayed the exact same serial number.

When Detectives went to the residence on B.J. Cox Road, they observed a vehicle registered to Anthony Hawkins in the driveway. Hawkins was also under investigation for a series of credit card fraud related thefts at Sam’s Club located at 3122 Dick Wilson Boulevard in Tallahassee. During that investigation, Hawkins was observed writing down credit card numbers from customers and then using them to purchase gift cards. Hawkins, a cashier at Sam’s Club, would then swipe the gift card during a cash purchase to pay for it and then pocket the cash.

When detectives went to make contact with the residents at 5506 B.J. Cox Road on August 23, 2012, they observed Antowan Hawkins, 19, sneak outside and attempt to conceal a marijuana plant from them. Detectives obtained a search warrant for the residence and located counterfeit money, the gift card used at Sam’s Club, the actual twenty dollar bill from the counterfeiting process, the cell phone used to order the pizzas, computer equipment, cocaine and marijuana. In addition to Johnson, Hall, Anthony and Antowan Hawkins, Marvin Barrington, 19, Zanders Barrington, 21, and Moses Footman, 21 were also located inside the residence. This investigation is ongoing and additional charges are forthcoming.
