News Release: Madison County Sheriff's Office
Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart reports that on Monday the 27th day of January 2014 the United States Marshalls Office, Gainesville Region, contacted the Sheriff’s Office concerning the possibility of a fugitive from Alachua County being in Madison County. Sheriff’s Office Investigators assigned to the Marshalls Office Fugitive Task Force initiated an investigation with the Marshalls Office.
After several hours of investigation it was discovered that the fugitive was in Madison County and accompanied by a second individual that was also wanted from St. Lucie County. The investigation proved the fugitives were being housed with a Cassandra Zabriskie in a residence at the intersection of River Park and Haven Trail in Lee Florida. However, the two fugitives’ suspected that Law Enforcement had made the discovery of their location and had fled on foot to the Withlacoochee River and eventually into a canoe traveling further down river.
The Sheriff’s Office obtained assistance from the Madison Correctional Institution Canine Unit with tracking the fugitives to where they entered the river and canoe. The Sheriff’s Office further activated its Dive Team Water Patrol Unit in an attempt to locate the fugitives on the river.
Eventually the Water Patrol Unit located the fugitives down river in the canoe and took both subjects into custody without further incident.
