UPDATE 6-1-11 6:10 PM

12-year-old Sara Mendez said she was startled by the shots. She said she couldn't believe what she heard and saw.

"I was just in my room and all of a sudden I thought I heard like five shots and I thought they were fire crackers," said Mendez. "But then I saw out my window someone went out really fast with their truck."

Lowndes County Sheriff's Office said they received a phone call about a shooting and hit and run at 9:15 Tuesday night at this apartment complex on Rolling Pines Drive.

Deputies add when they arrived they found a man dead. He was shot multiple times.

His identity is not being released at this time.

Lucas Santiago is accused of shooting the victim, fleeing the scene and hitting someone as he escaped.

He was captured sometime later in Alachua County, Florida.

Sara told Eyewitness News her father worked with the victim.

She said her father said he heard at work the victim told the suspect to stop drinking and that is when it turned deadly.

"The guy just came in and said don't be telling me to do anything, like your not the boss of me and just gave him a shot like three in the back and two in the head," said Mendez.

Residents who knew the victim say they're shocked.

"It's pretty surprising because they were nice," said Santiago Rodriguez.

Santiago faces charges of murder and possession of firearm during the commission of a crime.

He could face more charges pending the investigation.

Santiago is being held in the Alachua County Jail while he waits to be extradited back to Georgia.
