Criminal charges against the former Maclay High School baseball coach have been dropped.

John Todd McCoy was arrested in April and charged with battery. He got into a fight with an assistant coach after a game.

The prosecutor filed paperwork this week to drop the charges against McCoy. In court documents he said it appeared "both parties" engaged in the fight and there was not enough evidence to disprove McCoy's claims of self defense.

The Head Master at Maclay would not yet comment on whether McCoy will return to his coaching duties at the school.

The coach's attorney, Tim Jansen, says McCoy should never have been arrested in the first place. He says McCoy was trying to protect the players when he confronted assistant coach Christopher Lewis about refusing to put air in the tire of the team car.

An attorney for Maclay head baseball coach Todd McCoy says he is optimistic McCoy will soon be reinstated.

Defense attorney Tim Jansen denies that McCoy pushed assistant coach Christopher Lewis to the ground that night.

“We’re uncovering a lot of information that will give a different picture of what happened. We’re working as quickly as possible to gather that information so the charges can be dismissed and he can be reinstated as coach," Jansen said.

A local baseball coach is arrested after a fight with one of his assistant coaches.

Maclay baseball coach Todd McCoy was arrested on misdemeanor battery charges Monday, April 9th.

He is accused of pushing assistant coach Christopher Lewis to the ground after a post-game argument back on March 27th.

Lewis told deputies it all started when the two men had a disagreement over putting air in a tire.

Maclay Headmaster Bill Jablon says he is disappointed things got this far.

He says Lewis resigned the day after the confrontation and McCoy is on paid leave until the charges are resolved in court.

We are trying to reach McCoy's lawyer for comment.
