Leon County Sheriff's Deputies were preparing a press release to send to the media when their investigation took an interesting twist as a Tallahassee man takes desperate measures to avoid jail time after attempting to kill his live in girlfriend.

33-year-old Ronald Fox lies in a hospital bed fighting for his life after trying to kill his girlfriend, 30-year-old Crystal Grant and her unborn baby.

Spokesperson with LCSO, SGT James McQuaig says, "During the altercation the female was choked to the point of unconsciousness. When she at some point in time, later regained consciousness, the male was standing over her talking about killing her. This continued for about 12 hours."

A neighbor who lives near the couple on the 1400 block of East Lafayette Street says she was home the whole time and never heard a thing.

"Nothing like this has ever happening in this neighborhood. I've met the guy before and I see her everyday she works like an 8 to 5 job." says neighbor, Taylor Stafford.

Grant, who is two months pregnant, convinced Fox she needed to go to work Monday (3/28) morning. Fearing her life, she drove immediately to the Leon County Sheriff's Office.

LT Tim Baxter with LCSO says, "She gave us a very valid statement and to back up her statement she had physical marking and injuries on her that were consistent with what occurred."

Detectives immediately obtained a search and arrest warrant for Fox, but by the time law enforcement was granted access to the couple's duplex, Fox knew they were coming.

SGT McQuaig says, "While they were in the process of securing the apartment, they encountered the suspect in one of the rooms at that time, the individual shot himself with a hand gun."

Detectives were able to render emergency aid, possibly saving Fox's life.

Fox is at TMH in critical condition- he's charged with attempted first degree murder and false imprisonment . If Fox pulls through, an LCSO spokesman says he will stand trial.

Tallahassee, FL - On Monday, March 28, 2011 a woman walked into the Leon County Sheriff’s Office and reported that she had been held against her will by her live-in boyfriend, who had also tried to kill her. According to
the report, Crystal Grant, 30, was involved in an argument with Ronald C. Fox, 33.

Fox became enraged when Grant asked him to leave their residence in the 1400 block of East Lafayette Street. Detectives believe that Fox choked Grant until she lost consciousness for an unknown period of time. When Grant regained consciousness, Fox was standing over her talking about killing her. Fox also prevented Grant from leaving the home until this morning, when she was able to talk him into letting her leave to go to work.

Detectives obtained arrest warrants and a search warrant for the residence today. At approximately 3:30 p.m. detectives served the search warrant at the residence. During the time they were securing
the residence, detectives encountered Fox in a bedroom. Fox produced a handgun and shot himself in front of the detectives.

Detective David Farcas, who is also a paramedic, immediately rendered emergency aid to Fox. Leon County EMS and the Tallahassee Fire Department responded to the scene and continued life-saving
techniques. Fox was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital where he is in critical condition.

When well enough to be discharged, Fox will be taken to the Leon County Jail.
