A meth bust in Killearn Acres stuns neighbors.

A 24 year old man is under arrest and deputies say they caught him in the act in his own driveway.

The old van is still parked in the driveway. Deputies say someone complained about a strong smell coming from it.

When deputies got there around 4:30 in the morning, there was smoke coming out of the vent on top.

Inside, deputies say, was a man cooking meth.

"It's scary, it's very, very scary," said neighbor Sandy Cochran.
"We have young children. We have teenagers and it's a very, very frightening thing to know it's going on in your little neighborhood."

LCSO says it has been called to this home on the corner of Donerail and Tomy Lee Trail eleven times this year. but not for anything like this.

24 year old Kyle Shirkey was arrested and charged with manufacturing and trafficking meth as well possessing the ingredients to make more.

Drug agents say there were "two pots" cooking inside the van worth about $1500 on the street.

"Just from looking at the lab and talking to him, I think he's been doing it for a little while. It was not his first try," said LCSO SGT Ed Cook
"but it was not a large scale operation where he would be able to sell a lot in the community."

The real danger, Cook says, is those chemicals could have prompted an explosion big enough to blow the windows out of the van and set the house on fire.

"It's depressing. It's disappointing, but I'm glad to see that the officers were on top of it," said neighbor Sandy Fulop.

Drug agents found more meth-making gear inside the house. Two other people were home at the time, but deputies say they were not involved.
[UPDATE] Tallahassee, Florida - September 20, 2011 - 11:30am

At 4:30am on September 20, 2011, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a concerned citizen who advised there was a strong chemical odor coming from a van parked at 6600 Donerail Trail. Arriving deputies smelled the strong odors of camping fuel and acetone which are two of the chemicals commonly used to manufacture methamphetamine. Deputies also observed smoke coming from a vent on top of the van.

Deputies contacted Kyle H. Shirkey, 24, who was manufacturing methamphetamine inside the van and arrested him. Detectives from LCSO’s Vice Unit responded to the scene and dismantled the clandestine laboratory.

Sheriff Larry Campbell stated, “It was an alert citizen that provided the information which led the deputies to this meth lab. These cases are extremely dangerous to the public and to the law enforcement officers responding to them.”

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office reminds you to contact your local law enforcement if you think there may be any methamphetamine related activity near you. Remember, if you SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.

Don't act like the mother is not responsible for this at all. Kyle had never smoked meth before he met her. I've known him since he was 15. I stepped away from him after he came back from her place high on this stuff. She's the one who got him hooked on it. This stuff is the reason they wound up with a kid in the first place. Granted she didn't make him start cooking the stuff. Still, she is far from innocent in the situation. He never asked me to borrow money for drugs until she left him at bar one night because he didn't have anything for them to smoke.

I did not know he was cooking meth in a camper outside my home. He was homeless at the time and I was trying to help a lost soul, and the old saying goes "love thy neighbor, judge not lest you be judged yourself". So with that said, why is everybody hating on me?

Let me disect this. 3 sentences. The first included wilderness. The second, sexual behaviour, and criminal activities. The third, a concealed chemical weapon. Hmmmmm. Pretty sure you wouldn't be welcomed again.

Wow! Most of the people commenting on this article are a bunch of idiots that don't care about anything other than bashing each other and making racist comments. How about you just take responsibility for yourselves and stop criticizing everyone else. Drugs are a serious problem and they can affect anyone of any race or income level in some way or another. Regardless of your skin color or wealth, you can still be affected if you are assaulted, robbed or injured in an auto accident, etc. by a user. Simply put, drugs are not a black or white issue.

I wish they gave black people and white people 50 years for selling crack. They're back on the streets selling after a year. This guy should be hanged in front of the capital and Tallahassee should start a new zero tolerance program with this as an example.

i actually know the man, grew up with me right down the street. he's generally a good person and was down on his luck, and has a child. though he did a very stupid thing and should have his child taken from him. execution is a very serious punishment. i'd reccomend 30 lashes and a year for each $100 worth of meth.

If he was really down by the river, he wouldn't have been caught.

not that it really matters but for whats its worth.....for everyone making the crazy comments about this happening in Killearn. This thug did not live in a highend area of Killearn, quite the opposite. Stop acting stupid and realize that there are all social classes in the "Killearn" area, even slum type areas. Crime happens everywhere. People, you sound so ignorant when you start talking about how a crime happened due to race or area of town. Really, grow up, become educated
