Tallahassee, Florida - August

At approximately 9:00 p.m. on August 24, 2011, Deputy Shawn Wright was patrolling in the 3100 block of Mahan Drive. As Deputy Wright drove his patrol car through the Publix parking lot, he observed a man reach into a truck, grab a machete and then start walking towards another man who was holding a pipe wrench. Deputy Wright made contact with the men, identified himself and ordered both men to drop their weapons. The men were then separated and interviewed. Deputies also spoke with two witnesses.

Fred White, 65, told deputies that he was driving west on Mahan Drive near the shopping center when the truck driven by Steven Craig, 46, pulled out in front of him. White slammed on brakes and sounded his horn to avoid a collision with Craig. Moments later, Craig and White were side by side in traffic. Craig began yelling obscenities and threatening White, who pulled into the parking lot in an attempt to avoid a confrontation. When Craig armed himself with the machete, White said he grabbed the pipe wrench in order to defend himself.

Witnesses confirmed White’s statement and added that he never acted in an aggressive manner, even after grabbing the wrench for protection. Craig was arrested and transported to the Leon County Jail.
