A man accused of driving drunk and crashing into a Tallahassee Police car has now been sentenced for it.

Court records show 50 year old Kevin Renfroe entered a no contest plea to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and was sentenced to six months probation.

Tallahassee Police reports indicate Renfroe had a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit when he crashed into a squad car on Capital Cirle back in August 2012. The officer inside was not seriously hurt.

Court records show Renfroe had his driver's license suspended for six months and must have an ignition interlock installed in his car for the next six months too.

Court records also show he must attend DUI school, spend four days on the sheriff's work camp and perform 50 hours of community service

Assistant State Attorney David Marsey says that sentence is consistent with sentences for first time offenders and the fact that Renfroe hit a police car did not change anything.

A Tallahassee Police officer is recovering tonight after his patrol was t-boned by an accused drunk driver.

The man told police he went out for a few drinks after a long day at work.

Joanne Stewart could hardly believe it when she saw a picture of Officer Robert Hunkiar's patrol car.

"It's just amazing that anybody walked away alive as far as I'm concerned," Stewart said shaking her head.

Tallahassee Police say Hunkiar was on his way to a call when his car was hit by an SUV trying to turn at the corner of Capital Circle Northeast and Care Drive. Hunkiar survived with just minor injuries.

The man behind the wheel of that SUV, 49 year old Kevin Renfroe, was arrested for drinking and driving.

Officers say he lost his balance 11 times as he tried to walk a yellow line and breath tests showed his blood alcohol was .191 and .202. Both are more than twice the legal limit.

Police reports say Renfroe admitted to drinking that night. Renfroe told police when he got off work he went to the Circle K on North Monroe Street and drank a 24 ounce beer, then went to Calico Jack's and had three bourbon and cokes and ultimately made a stop at the McDonald's drive thru before heading home.

"In the probable cause, there is a statement from Mr. Renfroe saying that he was trying to turn across the street and all of a sudden he just ran into a police car," TPD Spokesman David Northway said.

Northway says the officer was on his way to a call, but was not responding with lights and sirens. He said Hunkiar was travelling with the normal flow of traffic.

"Thank God the police officer's okay and we hope and pray that there aren't any other people on the road drinking," Stewart said.

Renfroe has already been released from jail on $1250 bond. We have not been able to reach him for comment.
