UPDATE: February 20, 2012 Leon County, Florida
by Jacquie Slater

Darryl Gamble and Casey Minor were driving on I-10 when the moped they were on was struck by a passing car. Troopers say the pair was driving well under the speed limit and the car approaching them may not have been aware of how slow they were going.

Jeff Frost with the Florida Highway Patrol says, " We would caution all drivers to be aware of their surroundings and be cautious of slow moving vehicles when they're on the interstate."

When taking a scooter out onto the open road it is suggested that you have a helmet and the law requires that you wear protective eye wear

Helmets are required for anyone under the age of twenty-one. Some mopeds require that the driver have a motorcycle license to drive them, depending on the size of the engine.

"The cut-off is basically 49.99 c.c's. Anything less than that you just need a driver's license to operate it. Above that you need a motorcycle endorsement," says, Roy Smith--of All About Scooters.

To get a motorcycle license or endorsement on a current license, people must take a Motorcycle Training Course and pass an exam. Drivers say its a different kind of travel that takes some getting used to.

Scooter Driver, Sophie Crowdes says, "It's scary. Especially when people can pass because they don't always look for scooters. And you know, one wrong move by you or a car and you get just get seriously injured."
