Segment Between Capital Circle NE and CSX Railroad Crossing - Next week, the City of Tallahassee will begin major work on Easterwood Drive and Weems Road, with the goal of improving pedestrian/bicycle access and increasing vehicular safety. This reconstruction of the roadways will necessitate the following two road closures effective Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 9 a.m.
Easterwood Drive between Capital Circle NE and just east of Weems Road
Weems Road between the CSX railroad crossing and Easterwood Drive
All traffic will be detoured around the work zone. Access to the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center, Tom Brown Park and the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross will be via Connor Blvd. to Easterwood Drive through Tom Brown Park. The National Guard Armory on Easterwood Drive will be accessible via the Armory's first driveway off Easterwood Drive.
Access to Weems Road and adjacent residential and commercial areas will be via Mahan Drive. Notices have been provided to homes and businesses along Weems Road. Electronic message signs will be installed to advise motorists of the closures and directions to key facilities including the Animal Service Center.
The project is part of the City's PASS (Pedestrian and Street Safety) program and includes reconstructing Easterwood Drive between Weems Road and Capital Circle NE, and Weems Road between Mahan Drive and Easterwood Drive. With both roadways accessing Tom Brown Park, the project will bring significant improvements for walkers/runners and bicyclists as it includes the construction of sidewalks and bicycle lanes on both roads. The project will also include curbs/gutters for improved stormwater drainage.
The first phase of the project will feature a realignment of Weems Road and Easterwood Drive with a roundabout at the new intersection of the two roads. A new traffic signal will be added at the intersection of Capital Circle NE and Easterwood Drive, enhancing vehicular safety at the busy intersection.
Weather permitting, Easterwood Drive should reopen by mid-June 2011 with the entire first phase being completed by December 2011. The second phase of the project will include the reconstruction of Weems Road north of the CSX railroad crossing to Mahan Drive. Construction on that phase is scheduled for 2013.
