Press Release: Florida Department of Transportation

Chipley –The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has placed a 15-ton weight limit on the bridge on Orange Avenue/State Road (S.R.) 373 over the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail in Leon County.

FDOT inspectors found a few components of the bridge had significant deterioration, which affects the bridge’s load-carrying capability. The change in the load rating will reduce the weight of vehicles that can cross the bridge until repairs can be made. The bridge was originally built in 1949 and is scheduled for replacement in 2018.

Passenger vehicles and buses will still be able to use the bridge, while vehicles exceeding the posted weight limits such as sanitation trucks and fire engines must use an alternate route.

Signs displaying “Weight Limit 15 Tons” will be posted on both sides of the bridge and at the intersections of Orange Avenue and Adams Street and Orange Avenue and Capital Circle Southwest.

The deterioration was discovered during a regularly scheduled inspection of the bridge. The inspections are part of FDOT’s comprehensive bridge inspection and maintenance program designed to ensure that bridges are in safe and good working condition and are maintained to as high standards as possible.
