Gadsden County, Florida - January 9, 2012 - 6:30pm

A Gadsden County man came face to face with the men who broke into his home Monday.

He didn't want to be identified while he told us what happened.

"I could hear sounds in the house," he said.

The Gadsden County Sheriff's Office says Julius Hearns and Shon Thomas broke into the house through a back window.

Gadsden County Sheriff Morris Young says they made their way through the home, one room at a time.

Clothes, papers, even guns were left all over the house.

It was around that time that the homeowner came home and heard noise inside.

He says, he knocked at the front door, in part to gain his composure.

He says he went in through the front door and looked for one of his guns.

"I knew I had to get a hold of my weapon and I saw one wasn't there and I knew where another one was and got a hold of it," said the homeowner.

The suspects had taken one of his guns and gotten out of the house.

"They had got out the window apparently got out on the road here and started shooting at me," continued the man. "Shot some three or four times."

The homeowner wouldn't go down without a fight and fired back at the men.

"I think I was more scared once I got back outside," he said.

Investigators found a jewelry box in a wooded area less than 100 yards away from the home.

About two miles further down the road, they found guns they believe the suspects threw out of the car.

A few miles later, the two men crashed along Flat Creek Road when deputies were chasing them.

Sheriff Morris Young says this is one of many home invasions they've responded to recently.

"In Gadsden County, we have a lot of this going on right now. With the state of the economy and everything else going on," said Young.

Investigator Ulysses Jenkins says they plan to track down every last person who tries to start trouble in their county.

"We want the citizens to know, we want the criminals to know, we're not going to stop. However long it takes, we're going to keep going."

The homeowner wasn't hurt and the suspects were injured in the crash, not the shooting. The man's wife came home just minutes after this all unfolded.
