02-06-12 Project Update
Over the past two weeks, as work has progressed on the first portion of Phase Two of the Gaines Street Project, crews have been working on tearing out the old south lanes, including the old bricks, and building the new front entryway for St. Michael’s Pub. They have also been working to install the underground utility duct bank, which is primarily used to run communications lines (cable, phone, etc.).
This weekend (Feb. 11-12), there will be a partial intersection closure at Gaines Street and Railroad Avenue to allow crews to connect the duct banks from the east and west sides of the road. The full news release about this closure is included at the bottom of this update. You can also access it on Talgov.com.
Over the next two weeks, crews will begin undercutting the road, putting in base for the new road, installing curb and gutter for the medians and the south side of the road, and building a seating wall.
Partial Intersection Closure at Gaines St. and Railroad Ave. This Weekend
This weekend, the City of Tallahassee will close the intersection of Gaines Street and Railroad Avenue as part of the Gaines Street project. The closure will be in effect from 6 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, through 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12.
Crews will be working to connect duct banks under the south side of the intersection. This work involves open trenches and heavy equipment. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are advised to use extreme caution in the area.
Traffic headed westbound on Gaines Street will be allowed to continue westbound or turn right to head north on Railroad Avenue. Westbound traffic will not be able to turn left off Gaines Street onto Railroad Avenue.
Southbound and northbound through traffic on Railroad Avenue at the intersection of Gaines Street will not be permitted. Detour signs will be in place to take vehicles around the closure using adjacent streets.
Due to the existing one-way traffic pattern, eastbound traffic on Gaines Street will continue to be detoured at Woodward Avenue north to St. Augustine Street.
The City is currently working on the first segment of phase two of the reconstruction of Gaines Street. This segment runs approximately 750 feet from S. Macomb Street west through the intersection of Gaines Street and Railroad Avenue.
