We've all heard about the dangers of texting and driving. Maybe you've even seen them firsthand. Now a phone service provider and the state are teaming up to make folks stop texting behind the wheel- starting today.
Most of us have cell phones and it would be hard to find someone who doesn't text on one. Of course the problem comes in when drivers are doing it. Today has been dubbed "No Text on Board" pledge day. AT&T started the campaign in 2009 and states around the country have hopped on board.
They want every driver to make the pledge today that they'll stop or never start texting while driving. The Florida Department of Transportation is showing its support by putting the slogan "Don't Text and Drive" on the changeable message signs along interstates and the turnpike throughout Florida. I haven't come across any yet in our area. But this does go back to the bigger issue of distracted driving that we hear about so much. Concrete numbers have been difficult to determine when it comes to how many crashes are a result of texting but national statistics estimate the number is in the tens of thousands.
At the end of the day, this campaign and all the others you've seen are just trying to save lives and today another push to get people to make that decision.
