LCSO: 2 Dead After Fatal Motorcycle Crash Off County Rd. 12

Leon County, Florida - July 11, 2012 -

On Sunday July 8, 2012, at approximately 7:00 pm, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of County Road 12, west of Lake Iamonia Landing Road in reference to a single vehicle traffic crash. Arriving deputies learned that 50 year old Joseph Curles Jr., of Pelham, Georgia was operating a 1998 Honda Valkyrie motorcycle traveling west on County Road 12 with Dana Roberts, 41, of Bainbridge, Georgia riding as a passenger. During the navigation of a curve, the motorcycle drifted into the east bound lane, left the roadway and struck a guardrail, ejecting both Curles and Roberts. Neither rider was wearing a helmet.

Curles and Roberts were transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. Curles died on July 8, 2012. Roberts passed away on the evening of July 10, 2012.

Preliminary results from autopsies performed on Curles and Roberts indicated both died as a result of trauma associated with the crash. LCSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit is continuing to investigate the
circumstances surrounding the crash. Additional information will be released when available.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office has investigated 8 traffic fatalities since January 1, 2012.

being treated for life-threatening injuries.

LCSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit responded to the scene and is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. An autopsy is scheduled for July 10, 2012. Additional information will be released when available.
