Tallahassee, Florida - May 31, 2012 -
Project to be completed by mid-August with new roundabout, landscaping - The City of Tallahassee will close the intersection of Miccosukee Road and Fleischmann Road to all traffic beginning on Monday, June 4 at 9 a.m. The closure is necessary so construction can begin on a project designed to enhance traffic flow through the intersection, along with improving the aesthetic appearance in the area.
With a new roundabout being the primary traffic component of the reconstructed intersection, the project will also feature extensive landscaping and improved stormwater runoff systems. Detour routes will be clearly marked with the use of variable message boards and other signage.
As part of the City's continued outreach efforts, staff will be present at the intersection to hand out detour maps to motorists on the mornings of Friday, June 1, and Monday, June 4.
The City Commission approved the Miccosukee Rd. / Fleischmann Rd. Intersection Improvement Project in April. This followed a unanimous vote by the Tallahassee-Leon County Canopy Road Citizen's Committee in favor of the roundabout option in lieu of long turn lanes to address traffic concerns resulting from new development and the extension of Welaunee Boulevard. The Leon County Commission approved the necessary permitting for the project.
A new sidewalk is also being constructed on the west side of Fleischmann Road between Centerville Road and Thomas Butler Road, in support of the City's commitment to multi-modal transportation and to assist StarMetro patrons. Along with other City capital projects, the Miccosukee/Fleischmann Intersection Improvement Project further supports the City Commission's efforts to provide jobs during the economic downturn.
